Herpes

Herpes

Herpes while pregnant

As any pregnant woman knows, protecting your baby is top priority. For women infected with the herpes virus, this becomes even more of a concern. While the chances of a woman with  passing the virus onto her baby are slim, there is still a possibility that the child could become infected with at the time of birth. Talking openly with your doctor and educating yourself on herpes and pregnancy and how it can affect your pregnancy and baby are your best tools to protect yourself and your child. Following are some questions that you may have if you are experiencing herpes and pregnancy.

Can my baby get the virus from me?

Yes. While neonatal herpes occurs very rarely, there is a small chance (less than one percent) that your baby will contract the virus from you at the time of birth. In 90 percent of the cases, herpes is passed from mother to baby via an outbreak in the birth canal. In some instances, the virus can be spread even if there are no herpes sores because herpes can be passed asymptomatically, meaning that it has reactivated but there are no symptoms (sores) to indicate it.

I was just recently diagnosed with herpes. Is my baby at less risk?

No. Actually, pregnant women who were just recently diagnosed with the virus before becoming pregnant or during pregnancy pose slightly more of a risk for passing the herpes on to their baby. This is because a woman who hasn't had the disease for a longer period of time has not had as much of a chance to build antibodies to the virus that can be passed on to her unborn child. However, the risk of transmitting herpes is only slightly increased in newly diagnosed women, and women that get the disease during the first and second trimesters should still be able to provide enough antibodies to their babies.

Can I still have my baby naturally?

Yes. unless you are having an outbreak with active lesions, most doctors and obstetricians will recommend a vaginal birth as the risks associated with a Caesarean section far outweigh the risk of your baby becoming infected with herpes. Because of the antibodies you have passed to your baby during the pregnancy, your child will be protected against the virus and there is only a minimal chance (less than one percent) of the disease being passed on.

What if I get an outbreak right before I deliver?

The most important thing you can do if you notice an outbreak before delivery is to tell your doctor, it’s always best to be honest and let your OB know as soon as possible that you have active lesions. This is the best thing you can do to protect your baby because your doctor can then determine which is the safest route to take for delivery.

How can I protect my baby from getting this virus?

When trying to control this virus during pregnancy, the best way to protect your baby is to educate yourself and take precautionary and preventative measures to lessen your chance of having an outbreak, and discuss your condition frankly with your doctor.

Can’t Sleep?

Can't Sleep?

“Is Your iPad Causing Insomnia?”

By Dave From Paleohacks
Creator of the Paleohacks Cookbook

Recently revealed: What the blue light from our screens really does to our bodies…

Do you leave your PC, Mac or TV on in the bedroom, as you drift off to sleep each night?

Millions of people do–without understanding the dramatic health consequences…

These wonderful devices changing our lives are all the rage.

Yet, they all do something which causes harm in humans. The blue light they emit impairs restful sleep.

How? Exposure prevents the release of melatonin–an essential hormone associated with sleep.

Unfortunately, blue light not only suppresses melatonin production and sleep…

  • It’s considered “carcinogenic pollution”–a recent murine study shows blue light correlates with higher cancer rates…
  • A lack of melatonin is linked to higher rates of breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers, while blocking blue rays with amber glasses is linked to lower cancer rates…

Not only is sleep impacted…

  • It also negatively influences thermoregulation, blood pressure and glucose homeostasis…
  • Exposure significantly impacts your own mood…
  • Lower melatonin in mice is linked with higher rates of depression…
  • And blue light exposure may be playing a role in the higher incidence of cataracts and macular degeneration seen today…

How Your Sleep is Compromised

Ordinarily, the pineal gland, a pea-size organ in the brain, begins to release melatonin a couple of hours before your regular bedtime. The hormone is no sleeping pill, but it does reduce alertness, making sleep more inviting.

However, light — particularly of the blue variety — can keep the pineal gland from releasing melatonin, thus warding off sleepiness.

You don’t have to be staring directly at a television or computer screen: If enough blue light hits the eye, the gland can stop releasing melatonin.

The Health Consequences Can
Be Chronic and Terminal

Not only does this impact melatonin, a growing body of evidence suggests that a desynchronization of circadian rhythms plays significant role in various tumoral diseases, diabetes, obesity, and depression.

So light serves as a cue, but how?

It has long been known that the retina contains two types of photoreceptors, or light sensors: rods and cones. The cones allow us to see colors, while the ultra-sensitive rods are used for night vision, motion detection and peripheral vision.

Surprisingly, neither of them is the body’s primary tool for detecting light and darkness and synchronizing our circadian clocks.

There’s a third kind of sensor in our eyes, officially discovered in 2002. Called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, or ipRGCs, these relatively crude sensors are unable to pick up on low levels of light — from a dim night light, for example — but sluggishly signal light (to read more, click here)

The Paleo Diet

By Dave From Paleohacks
Creator of the Paleohacks Cookbook

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the last couple years, I'm sure you've heard of the "Paleo Diet."

I hate to even call it a "diet", because it's really just the REAL way that humans have eaten for almost 1.9 million years, as opposed to the modern day processed food diet full of grains, sugars, and processed vegetable oils.

Whether you have or not, what you probably DON’T realize is that it’s the fastest growing “diet” in the world right now. From celebrities, chefs, elite athletes… even fitness experts–everyone is eager to try it or adopt it.

And for good reason! Because no other diet or eating plan provides so many benefits so fast:

  • Increased Energy

  • Clearer Skin

  • Lean, Muscular Body

  • Enhanced Libido

  • Greater Mental Clarity

  • All Day Stamina

  • Better Workouts

  • And More

The list goes on and on. Talk to anyone who’s actually eaten Paleo for even a full month and chances are, they’ll rave about the changes they started seeing in their body.

Acne

Acne

You breezed through your teenage years with a zit or two and never thought about it. Now you look into the mirror in horror. What happened? How is it possible to develop acne in your mid 30's, isn't this supposed to happen to teenagers? You find yourself embarrassed and confused.

Acne_1

The unfair fact is that adult acne will affect 25% of men and 50% of women in their adult lives. We know that teenage acne is due to hormonal changes which causes an increase in oil production. The causes of adult acne aren't as clear. There isn't just one cause. Acne in adult women can be linked to cosmetic use and some hair products. It can be brought on by the hormonal fluctuations associated with pregnancy. Certain types of prescription medications can cause adult acne. Acne vulgaris which is the type of acne that affects adults generally doesn't happen after the age of 40. Unlike teenage acne that starts on the forehead and cheek area adult acne tends to show more on your chin, jaw and neck area.

The treatment you receive for your acne will be based on the severity of the acne outbreak. Mild acne outbreaks can be treated with topical and over the counter products that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or glycolic acid, the same creams that teenagers use. If you acne is more severe your dermatologist may prescribe oral antibiotics. These antibiotics treat the bacteria causes of acne.

Micro dermabrasion and acid peels can be used to help diminish any scarring that might occur with adult acne.

Acne is a complex condition that is triggered by several underlying factors. The only way to neutralize your acne condition is to tackle all these acne-contributing factors-holistically. Since the wrong diet is only one of these acne-triggering factors, in most cases no special diet can cure acne.

There is a however, a tight connection between diet and acne formation. Dietary factors can trigger and aggravate your existing acne. Avoiding the wrong foods such as milk, sugar and hydrogenated oils, and eating cleansing and hormonal balancing foods such as green leafy vegetables and essential fatty acids, can help your skin heal itself from the inside out and dramatically reduce your acne symptoms.

There are also several important dietary principals that you must understand and follow if you ever want to cure your acne for good.

Taking responsibility over your body and adhering to these dietary principals along with taking the necessary steps to tackle all acne contributing factors, holistically, will not only cure your acne permanently and give you the flawless acne free skin you deserve, following these principals will also significantly improve your overall health, mental well-being, look and feel.
